Trip to San Diego

For spring break this year we took a family trip to a place that we've wanted to go for a long time...San Diego! And it was the perfect time for our family with the boys at the ages they are. Aside from numerous wonderful activities there are to do in San Diego, one of our biggest reasons for visiting was to see Uncle Dean and Aunt Carol (my dad's brother and his wife).  They were amazing hosts and took us all around the city to our planned destinations as well as to some gems we would have never known about since they know so much about the city. 

Here's a synopsis of all the fun we had:

Day 1: Flew into town and Dean and Carol surprised us by meeting us at the airport!  They helped us get settled into our hotel and then we headed straight to Old Town to enjoy a yummy Mexican dinner at the famous Cafe Coyote restaurant (sadly no photos).  It was also a special evening because we celebrated Carol's birthday!

Day 2: Our first official day was filled with the incredible San Diego zoo. It is no wonder why so many people rave about this zoo.  It truly is so great with so many animals that we don't have at our zoo in Seattle including elephants and pandas.  The boys were heaven!  That evening we got to relax at Dean and Carol's house and enjoy a yummy BBQ, playing in their beautiful yard/garden, having great conversation on the patio and enjoying the warm weather evening.

Day 3: This day was a treat especially for James because we visited the USS Midway aircraft carrier.  I didn't realize it, but when my uncle served in the Navy, he was actually stationed on an aircraft carrier.  It was so fun to hear his real life stories of what we were seeing as we toured the ship.  Such an incredible structure.  I can't believe something that big floats!!  We continued our day by visiting Coronado Island.  What a beautiful and luxurious place!  Dean and Carol treated us to a lovely lunch by the beach at Hotel Del Coronado and then we spent some time playing on the beach.  Now it was truly feeling like vacation!  That evening we just stayed at the hotel as a family. The boys played in the pool and we just enjoyed the happy hour snacks for our dinner.  It was nice to have some down time so we could gear up for the next day's major activity.

Day 4: Legoland!!  Quite possibly our boys' definition of heaven since they play with Legos literally every day.  And here was a whole amusement park devoted to their favorite toy!  Legoland did not disappoint.  It is a really nicely maintained amusement park with lots of fun rides and tons of Lego structures.  Our boys were almost at perfect ages.  Maybe next year when Cameron is 4 would have been absolutely perfect because there were a few rides where he was too small.  But any older than 8 or so and I think the boys wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.  It's a perfect park for smaller kids.  We saw lots of great Lego characters like Batman and the Ninjago ninjas.  The mini Lego structures were incredible!  The amount of detail and Lego pieces blew us away.  Both boys were brave and rode their first roller coaster too!  Nathan hated it and Cam loved it.  :)  They were brave in general though and did lots of rides that I thought they'd be maybe too scared for.  I was proud of them for getting out of their comfort zone.  James and I got a roller coaster ride in too (separately of course).  We ended the super fun day with dinner at In N Out Burgers too.  What could be more perfect?

Day 5: Dean and Carol met back up with us after having sat out of Legoland day which was a wise decision. They took us to a hidden gem that we wouldn't have known about otherwise.  We drove up to La Jolla and watched all the seals and sea lions along the coast!  It was so cool to watch so many of them lying on the rocks sunning themselves or swimming in the ocean.  We took a nice walk along the coast enjoying the ocean views.  Then they took us to one of their favorite beach eateries called World Famous in Pacific Beach area for lunch.  And then one other surprise--a cool train store in Old Town where they had a HUGE model train set up.  Nathan was in heaven!!  That evening we got to meet up with Levi (my step cousin I think??) who is in the Navy and was currently stationed in San Diego.  We all went out to dinner to Dean and Carol's favorite Italian restaurant for yummy pasta and pizza. 

Day 6: Another one of our most favorite days because we visited SeaWorld!  I haven't been to SeaWorld since I was probably 7 years old.  And it's still really great--definitely didn't disappoint.  Our boys were in heaven especially since they love animals so much.  Dean and Carol were troopers and did the whole day with us (do they ever run out of energy?  I'm so impressed!).  We saw all 4 of their shows--the sea lions/otter show, the pet show, killer whale show and dolphin show.  We rode some more rides and went to tons of exhibits to see the sea animals.  We basically were there from open to close.  And we felt like we could have used one more day to see everything.  So much fun!
That evening we had our final meal at Casa Machado, a fantastic (and Dean and Carol's favorite) Mexican restaurant which is at a small municipal airport.  So while you're eating your dinner, you can watch the small airplanes take off and land.  The food was so good!  Perfect way to end such a great trip. 

Thank you Dean and Carol for your wonderful hospitality.  We were so grateful to finally get some Vitamin D.  And what a perfect place San Diego is for making really great family memories.  We can't wait to go back soon!

 

New Family Member

I can't believe I've been remiss in updating about our newest family member!  After all, he's been with us now since Christmas.

I am so pleased to introduce you to our fish, Batman!

Batman is a Betta fish and was given to Nathan for Christmas by Gramma and Grampa (Thank you, Gramma & Grampa!).  We named him Batman mostly because of his blue and black coloring.  Isn't he pretty?  So far he has been the perfect pet for our stage in life right now.  He gets fed 2 times a day.  We clean his tank out once a week.  And other than that he is very low maintenance which is about all we can handle right now with our busy schedule.  He is simply content to swim around his little tank, hide in his octopus tunnel and observe the goings on of the Spauldings. 

What I've been surprised about is actually how interactive he is!  When I come up to his cage, he greets me and I know it sounds weird, but he actually seems excited that someone has come to say hi! Or maybe he thinks I'm just there to feed him. But I like to think that he knows us and is happy to get some attention. I've read that you can train Bettas to do tricks and jump up to get their food from your hand.  We haven't tried that yet, but sometimes when I'm feeding him, Batman will do a little jump for the food so I think he's interested in doing some tricks at some point.

Batman resides in Nathan's room. We all take turns feeding him and it's been fun to teach the boys how to be mindful of taking care of a pet.  Hopefully we can keep him healthy and around with us for a long time.

A New Family Activity

Our family has discovered a new activity that we all enjoy....skiing!  Back in the fall, James and I decided that we were ready for our family to venture into the world of ski lessons.  We weren't sure how the boys would do or if they would like it, but we thought let's just try it and see how it goes.  Lessons just wrapped up last weekend I think we can confidently say the season was a HUGE success!  Definitely exceeded our expectations.

Once we started looking into options and realities of ski lessons, we quickly realized that this commitment to try being a ski family is not for the faint of heart.  It is definitely an investment.  Gear rentals, season passes, and weekly lessons quickly become a small fortune.  And then on top of it all, James and I decided to bite the bullet and finally buy our own gear and season passes this year as well.  Gulp.  But now looking back, it was a shock to the budget for a couple weeks, but totally worth it in the end.  It was so wonderful being able to just pack up the car and go--no renting gear the night before, no waiting in lines to buy lift tickets, etc. 

The other tricky part was figuring out where/how to do lessons.  It's really tough to find lessons for 3 year olds.  Plus the Snoqualmie Summit lessons basically charge you an arm and a leg for each kid.  And they weren't willing to make an exception for a 3 year old.  Our ideal situation was private lessons for both boys so they could be comfortable being together and less overwhelmed.  Our constant goal through this was to make skiing fun for the boys--not scary.  Luckily we stumbled upon SKIBACS which is a ski school for Boeing employees and their families.  What a godsend!  They made an exception and let Cam participate in the lessons.  And they assigned us the most amazing ski instructor for little kids.  Hilary was like a kindergarten teacher/ski instructor all in one.  She was energetic, kind, funny, creative and made the kids instantly feel at ease. 

So for the past 6 weeks we've gone up to the mountain on Sunday afternoons for 2-hour ski lessons.  The transformation in our kids from week 1 to week 6 has astounded us.  Both boys are able to get down the mountain on their own.  They can both turn, stop themselves, use the wedge, ride the chairlift, and ski pretty fast all with confidence and ease.  Our goal for the season was that they would at least start to learn the fundamentals and just feel more familiar on skis.  We hoped, but didn't expect that they'd actually both be skiing.  Especially Cameron.  But Hilary was a miracle worker.  :)

The weekend after lessons ended, we decided to go up one more time just as a family.  Cameron did 6 runs without taking a break!  And Nathan did 4.  As we were all skiing down the mountain together, James and I just looked at each other with big smiles and felt like pinching ourselves!  We hope this becomes a longtime family activity--with ski vacations and fun weekend memories of getting outside and enjoying God's beautiful creation.  Who knows--the boys may not end up loving it or want to stick with it.  And that will be ok too.  But this year at least we were so grateful for our boys being brave, persistent, and overcoming a fear.  We were also so happy to make sure to get outside every weekend, be active, and learn a lot together as a family.  Already excited for next year!

Christmas 2017 Memories

Happy 2018!  I entered this year feeling refreshed and excited for the new year.  Hoping that it would be calmer and less turbulent than 2017 was.  So far it doesn't seem that it's going to be with what's been going on in the news the first two weeks of the year.  Personally 2018 is shaping up to be pretty good so far though so I keep my hope.  :)

Before we get too far into 2018, I wanted to document the wonderful holiday season we had this year.  I would say this was one of the most magical Christmas' we've ever had.  The boys are at such wonderful ages and everything about Christmas is so wondrous and exciting.  In fact, they're still singing Christmas carols on a regular basis and we're in mid-January!  Apparently this year's holiday had a big impact on them!  I tried really hard to soak up this holiday and be present.  And I think I did a pretty good job.  I didn't feel overly busy or stressed about all the stuff we had going on or had to get done.  It probably helped that I took the whole week off work before Christmas to rejuvenate and have time to finish shopping, wrap, etc.  Not being stressed really allowed me to gratefully observe the joy in our boys' eyes with all the favorite traditions around Christmas and to immerse in those things along with them.  I felt like a kid again myself! 

So here's the recap of Christmas 2017 season:

We started December off as we usually do by going to Keith & Scott Tree Farm to pick out our tree.  We found the perfect one for Cameron too!  :)

Next up was the Symphony Tiny Tots Christmas concert same as we went to last year with Nana and Pops.  It's always a sweet little show with musical instruments and catchy songs.  Perfect for toddlers who don't last long sitting in a theater seat.

Right after the concert, James and I had the wonderful opportunity to do our annual Christmas shopping date while Nana and Pops watched the boys.  This year we chose to "shop small" and spent the day on Bainbridge Island.  They have the greatest toy store, book store and cute boutique shops.  Plus it was just so fun to walk around town and enjoy the sunny day.  Unfortunately we couldn't complete our whole list and still had to do a trip to Toys R Us, but it wasn't too bad.  :)  Unfortunately I failed and didn't capture any photos that day. 

I also forgot to mention that before Thanksgiving we did another one of our favorite traditions this time of year: visit Molbaks.  I always love their beautiful holiday decor including the gorgeous poinsettias!

Our church does a really cute children's Christmas play every year.  This year Nate played a shepherd and Cam played a sheep for the Jesus birth story.

By far one of our most favorite traditions is the Santa Train through the Snoqualmie railroad.  And this year lived up to our expectations as usual complete with home baked cookies, visiting Santa, and the best part--the train ride!

One extra special treat for me was getting to volunteer for Nathan's class winter party.  I never get a chance to help out or be in his classroom with my full time work schedule.  But since I took an extra week off, I was able to finally help out!  They decorated Christmas trees for the party and I think more of the candy ended up in Nate's mouth instead of on his tree.  I stayed a little longer and also got to eat lunch with him in the cafeteria with all his friends.  Kindergarteners are hilarious!  I was cracking up!

We spent one afternoon baking and decorating yummy sugar cookies with Nana and Pops.  The boys really helped out this year both with cutting out shapes and decorating with frosting and sprinkles. 

And then that night we braved the cold and the rain and did the zoo lights at Woodland Park Zoo.  We hadn't done that for a couple of years and it was really fun!  They are pretty creative with how they create all the animals and set up the lights to make it look like the animals are moving!

Finally the main event was here!  We spent Christmas Eve with Nana and Pops picking up our Christmas danish from Nielsen's bakery in Seattle, attending their church and having a yummy beef tenderloin dinner at their house along with opening presents.

Christmas morning was one of my most favorite times.  It had started snowing the night before and we actually woke up to a white Christmas!  I've only had maybe 2-3 white Christmases in my whole life.  The boys couldn't believe it!

The boys hurried downstairs to find presents under the tree covered with a sheet (tradition from when I was a kid).  Just like my parents made us do, the boys had to have a little breakfast.  Then we read the Jesus birth story.  Finally then we did our stockings and he presents under the tree after much anticipation. 

Santa exceeded our expectations and gave the boys exactly what they asked for when they sat on his lap.  Nathan got a Lego train set that's electric!  And Cameron got a red race car that has a remote control.  Other popular items this year were Star Wars x-fighter and tie-fighter toys, Ninjago Legos, books, train track stuff, Darth Vader rain boots, Playmobil toys, puzzles, and Transformers. 

The rest of the day was spent with the Spauldings.  Together we took our time opening stockings and presents and just enjoyed each other's company and some yummy food (prime rib!).  There were a couple of big surprises too.  Nathan got to go on a treasure hunt and at the end found a real life fish!  We now have a new family member!  Batman is a betta fish and the newest member of our family.  Cameron also got to go on a treasure hunt and found a Blaze Island toy set! (Blaze is a Monster truck in a show on tv).  For both boys, Grampa found this wonderful old electric train set that he bought from someone.  The boys were enamored with it and now they ask all the time to go to Gramma and Grampa's to play with the train. 

Gosh looking back it really was a special (and busy!) month.  But so many wonderful memories and fun stories to tell.  Right now we're in the perfect window with our boys' ages--they believe everything and are so enthusiastic about everything related to Christmas.  I know these years are limited and will go quickly.  Thankfully I feel like we really soaked up Christmas 2017.  Can't wait to do it all again next year!
